Foundational Learning Assessment

Makueni Youth Network’s Foundational Literacy and Numeracy program is designed to ensure every child acquires the essential skills needed to thrive in school and beyond. In partnership with government institutions and leading education stakeholders—including Usawa Agenda, Mizizi Elimu, SDGs Kenya Forum, National Gender and Equality Commission, Elimu Yetu Coalition, and PAL Network—we conduct annual, community-driven learning assessments to generate reliable data on literacy and numeracy outcomes across Makueni County.

Our approach goes beyond assessment. We analyze gender disparities in learning, evaluate the level of community support toward foundational education, and assess government investments in school infrastructure and learning environments. By translating this evidence into actionable insights, we actively engage duty bearers to address policy gaps, strengthen accountability mechanisms, and advocate for increased, responsive budgeting toward foundational learning systems.

Through this integrated model of evidence generation, partnerships, and advocacy, Makueni Youth Network is driving sustainable improvements in education quality—ensuring that all learners, especially the most marginalized, have an equal opportunity to succeed.
