The majority of learners in rural and marginalized communities in Makueni struggle with reading comprehension and basic arithmetic, often due to language barriers, under-resourced schools, and absentee governance. Our Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) assessments are not just diagnostic tools—they are instruments of justice.
We conduct grade-level evaluations using locally adapted tools that measure learners’ abilities to read with understanding, apply math concepts to daily life, and demonstrate age-appropriate cognitive skills. The data is then disaggregated by gender, geography, and disability status, ensuring no child is rendered invisible by averages. Through school scorecards, community feedback forums, and government roundtables, we use FLN outcomes to advocate for targeted interventions such as remedial learning, teacher retooling, and mother-tongue transition programs. Our endgame is simple: ensure every learner acquires the building blocks of learning regardless of their socio-economic background.
